~ v 1 to prevent or try to prevent someone from doing something by making the action difficult or unpleasant, or by showing them that it would not be a good thing to do  (You should install locks on all your windows to discourage burglars. | discourage sb from doing sth)  (We ought to be focusing on discouraging kids from smoking.) 2 to make someone think that they will not be able to succeed in doing something so that they no longer want to continue doing it  (Students soon get discouraged if you criticize them too often.)  (- opposite encourage)
